The Iconic Penshurst Hotel was built in 1862 and is situated prominently on the corner of Martin & Bell St in the centre of Penshurst. This is the premier location in town as all passing traffic goes through the adjacent roundabout
The 2 storey bluestone building boasts a history and stature from the stone that was cut from the ground of the surrounding district. This Hotel consists of a bistro/café at the front of the building which hosts a large bluestone open fireplace. Two small private dining rooms with polished floorboards adjoin the main hallway that leads to a formal function room. The main sports bar area is a great place to watch Fox Sports while enjoying a drink around the timber wine barrels. At the rear of the Sports Bar you can enjoy a casual drink on the spacious timber deck or on the large grassed outdoor area.
Reverse cycle inverter systems are located in the Bistro as well as the Sports Bar to keep the patrons cool in summer, with the open fires and combustion heater offering warmth in winter. The bars are serviced by a glycol beer system which offers a font of 4 beers in each bar. The Bistro, Dining rooms, Sports Bar and Function Rooms which seat a total of 140 people are easily catered for with a large commercial kitchen. Current trading hours are Tuesday- Thursday 3pm- 7pm, Friday 12pm-11pm, Saturday 10am- 11pm and Sunday 10am -7pm.
The first storey of the Hotel is accessed from a beautiful ornate entrance hallway with polished Baltic floors. The first floor of the Hotel consists of 5 bedrooms and a large management quarters consisting of a bedroom/lounge room and separate meals area. The upstairs rooms have lovely views of the town and the two volcanic mountains in Mt Rouse and Mt Napier.
Penshurst is situated on the Hamilton Highway, 27 km south-east of Hamilton, 200km west of Geelong and 274 km from Melbourne and the ideal stopping point between the Grampians to the north( Halls Gap 100km, Dunkeld 29km) and the sea ( Warrnambool 71km and Pt Fairy 63km).
Penshurst is an historic rural service centre situated at the foot of Mt Rouse in South West Victoria. It has a population of around 500 people and offers basic retail, education and health services including 2 primary schools (State & Catholic), aged care facility, hotel, post office, police station and general retail shops. It has a range of sporting facilities including football, netball, and bowling clubs with the Racing Club continuously celebrating its Cup meeting on Boxing day since 1866.
