Description

Originally constructed in 1871 for then Hamilton Spectator editor Geo. Mott, Kilora occupies a unique place in Hamilton's history. Throughout it's past, the home has provided accommodation for a variety of tenants ranging from officers of the Royal Australian Armament School during World War 2 to Monivae girl boarders in the late 1970's. More recently Kilora hosted overnight accommodation for the Victorian governor The Hon. Alex Chernov AC QC and his entourage.

Occupying a commanding position directly opposite the botanical gardens and at the apex of Hamilton's Church Hill, Kilora is one of the few homes in Hamilton constructed of red polychrome brick and at approx. 74 squares is considered to be the largest single level home in the town.

Entrance to Kilora is via a magnificent ornate reception hall featuring tiled floor, timber ceiling and leadlight windows framing the doorway. To the left are the formal rooms - an expansive drawing room with open fire place and outstanding overmantle with Robert Prenzel carvings a feature. Immediately adjacent is the formal dining room with its high timber ceilings, polished boards and Rocke & Co mantle.

Accommodation is adequately provided for with 6 double bedrooms, 3 bathrooms (two ensuite), and are serviced by a wide spacious gallery with polished boards and deep Victorian skirts.

The heart of the house is the kitchen featuring a chefs dream Lacanche cooker with gas hotplates and electric oven as well as extensive granite benchtops and Bosch dishwasher. Also central to the home is a cozy parlour and a library/ office with open fire and polished boards.

Entertainment is well taken care of with the formal billiard room housing a full size Alcock table (no. 4256) and featuring extensive wood panelling, open fire place, polished floors and vaulted timber ceiling as well as feature windows with leadlight panels.
Outside there is an inground swimming pool of approx 12m x 6m with adjacent Cabana housing shower, toilet and kitchen facilities. A raised cubby house is there for the kids (or grandkids), while the raised beds of the kitchen garden are easily accessible from the kitchen via the outdoor bricked entertainment area.

The superbly laid out garden of Kilora features an original stone wall, fruit trees and exotic plants; all surrounding the house and accessed via a driveway still with its original layout.
