With a lifetime dedicated to the livestock industry, Clarrie Smith has been a respected Auctioneer and Stock Agent with Charles Stewart since November 1988, bringing decades of experience, knowledge, and passion to the profession.

Clarrie's connection to livestock selling began many years before his professional career. Growing up in the Cobden district, he recalls that when he finished school, Early Friday mornings he would jump on horseback to help collect livestock from farms along the way, all destined for the weekly Cobden Livestock Market. In those days, the livestock yards were located on Cobden's main street, directly opposite the local pub. It was not uncommon for bulls to break through fences and end up wandering down the street, creating plenty of excitement for the townsfolk. Occasionally, Clarrie would even spend the night guarding cattle before sale day.

At just 18 years of age, Clarrie stepped up to auction calves, beginning what would become a distinguished career spanning more than six decades. His auctioneering journey saw him conducting sales across the region, including Camperdown on Tuesdays, Newmarket Saleyards in Melbourne on Wednesdays and Thursdays, and Timboon Saleyards on Fridays. Through hard work, dedication, and an unwavering commitment to the industry, Clarrie established himself as one of the region's most respected livestock auctioneers.

Among the many highlights of his career, Clarrie takes particular pride in mentoring and developing young auctioneers. Over more than 60 years, he has helped guide countless industry professionals, passing on the skills, confidence, and values that have defined his own career. Another standout achievement was being invited to auctioneer at the prestigious Calgary Stampede in Canada, an honour that reflects the reputation he has built within the livestock and auctioneering industry both in Australia and internationally.

His contribution to the wider community has also been significant, regularly volunteering his auctioneering talents for fundraising events and charitable causes.

Outside of work, Clarrie enjoys spending time with his wife, Mondy and family and continues to be actively involved in running his own farm, where he manages both cattle and sheep.

Known for his wealth of experience, colourful stories, and commitment to both clients and colleagues, Clarrie remains a highly valued member of the Charles Stewart team and a true ambassador for the livestock industry.
