Big Bucks and Northern Buyers at Birregurra Weaner Sale

A combined selling fixture paved the way for large numbers and high prices at the January Birregurra Steer Weaner and Female Sale.

The combination sale consisted of more than 3000 head of joined females, steers, heifers and the potential for cows and calves, that all sold very well to a larger buying group, including northern orders which Colac hasn’t seen for five or ten years according to auctioneer and livestock consultant Jamie McConachy.

Charles Stewart Dove agents kicked off the sale with joined female cows to the account of Woodrowvale Pastoral Company which made for a strong start, fetching $3640, laying the platform for the entire day.

Steer weaners hovered around the 400kg mark and opened up at around $2500 on the heavier end. Black cattle once again sold very well with a pen of 25 Angus steers to the account of C & L Castaldo weighing 379kg making $6.56c/kg or $2490. A pen of 13 Angus steers to the account of Shone & Sheedy weighing 360kg sold for $6.69c/kg totalling $2410. A pen of 18 Hereford steers to the account of W & F Tyrer weighing 300kg made $6.76c/kg coming out at $2030.

Almost all calves put forward in the sale were weaned in the first week of December and consequently sold well, with the industry now demanding of this.

“Heifer weaners were once again outstanding, regardless of weighing slightly less than steers they sold not too far off their counterparts, hovering in exactly the same price range being $5.80c/kg through to $6.80c/kg and up to $7.00c/kg and more on the lighter cattle”, said Jamie McConachy.

A pen of 28 Angus heifers to the account of Rock Ridge Pastoral weighing 319kg made $6.45c/kg coming out at $2060. Lighter cattle including 24 Angus heifers to the account of G Lockhart weighing 262kg made $7.09c/kg or $1860.

Agents commended the combination sale attributing it to attracting a broader buying group and keeping prices on par with previous sales, particularly throughout December.
