Locals look to re-stock at Camperdown
Demand for A2 cows pushed prices to $2700 at a Camperdown dispersal sale this week.
Interest in the portion of the herd which produced only A2 protein milk was so strong that these 26 cows averaged up to $500 more than the rest of the 62-head offering, sold by Charles Stewart on behalf of vendors JP&HP Breen, Beeac.
The Breen family, who are relinquishing dairying, averaged $2069 for the A2 cows and $1693 for the remainder, registering a total sale clearance.
Local south west Victorian buyers packed the stands, but it was six buyers from the Warrnambool, Port Campbell, Cobden and Timboon areas which led the bidding for the autumn-calved Friesian and Friesian-Illawarra herd.
A two-year-old in-milk, A2 tested Friesian sired by Kellercrest Lancome topped the sale at $2700 and was purchased by the McGlade Family. This local family bought all the A2 cows through their agent Charles Stewart Nash McVilly.
Other volume buyers included the Logan family who took home 41 through agents Brian O’Halloran & Co of Warrnambool.
Prices dipped to $800 for older cows, but most of the offering was young and attracted plenty of competition.
Buyers were complimentary of the quality and condition of the herd, with those looking to restock buoyed by recent seasonal conditions and positive farmgate milk prices for next season.
The commercial herd was sold with a complete breeding history.
The Breens will sell their registered Illawarra herd in Colac on June 26 as part of a special multivendor Illawarra dispersal.
