2023 Feature Sale Wrap

The annual January feature sales returned in 2023 with prices being well under last year’s extremely high prices, the drop consistent of all other sales throughout the state.
Charles Stewart and Company’s average was approximately $500-$600 under the results seen in 2022 however, only $100-$200 down on 2021 results.

The Birregurra Premier Weaner Sale at Colac’s Regional Saleyards kicked off the action on Wednesday, January 4 with agents yarding approximately 3,000 head. Angus steers were fetching between $4.50 c/kg to $5.20 c/kg with outstanding results at as much as $6 c/kg and their heifer counterparts’ best pen making $1900 or $4.50 to $5.20 c/kg.

The Mortlake Annual Weaner Sale followed on Thursday, January 5 which saw approximately 6,300 head of cattle yarded in total. Prices were on trend from the Birregurra Weaner Sale held a day prior with Angus steers making $4.60-$5.30 c/kg and their sister counterparts making between $4.50-$5.10 c/kg.
Irrewarra producers, the Dullard family, trading as Larobe Angus sold 248 head of cattle in total, with their best 44 steers topping at $1866 and their top 30 heifers selling for $1710. The Steel family, trading as Penrith Nominees sold 34 steers weighing 384kg at $4.98 c/kg or $1913.
As for heifers, Windarra Farms sold 18 head for $5.24 c/kg or $1772.

The Camperdown F1 Sale rounded out the trifecta, held on Friday, January 6 with agents yarding 1680 head of joined heifers, unjoined heifers and heifers with calves at foot.
Angus Friesian x heifers PTIC topped at $3050 with Hereford Friesian x heifers PTIC making up to $2850.
Angus Friesian x heifers with Limousin calves at foot made $4300, Hereford Friesian x heifers made $1980 to round out the unjoined cattle and small heifers were making anywhere from $800 and upwards.

Finally, the Mortlake Feature Female Sale was held on Thursday, January 12 with a total of 1650 head yarded for the day with joined heifers topping at $4000.
