Flavours of the Middle East in Forrest

A love of being with people and enjoying good homemade food inspired Ely Alkurd to pursue her passion for opening a restaurant in a town close to her heart.

Setting out to find a space within Colac to launch her new business venture, Ely enlisted the help and support of leasing consultant Anthony McDonald. Following numerous inspections, it was Anthony who phoned Ely to alert her of the ‘perfect’ space that had just become available.

“I’ve known Anthony through the community for a long time, and he was able to take me to inspect a couple of properties that were probably not really what I wanted and he said you are going to spend lots of money and you won’t know if it’s going to work or not, so let’s keep looking,” said Ely.

Before long, Anthony walked Ely through 16 Grant Street in Forrest, with an established kitchen, restaurant and outdoor dining area, it was the perfect place to launch Dar Teta.

Having previously worked in hospitality in Forrest, Ely knew what business in the town was like, knowing it was a place that was fun, busy and interesting.

Serving Middle Eastern and Mediterranean cuisine and drawing inspiration from Egypt, Syria, and Palestine, Ely is focused on using local ingredients in all her cooking. She also sources local wine from Yeowarra Hill, Blakes Estate and Dinny Goonan and as for beer, it can’t come any fresher than the Forrest Brewery.

Not only is the food delicious and wholesome but the restaurant also has a homely feel to it. Eclectic antiques sourced from local thrift shops are decorated throughout, with hand sewn cushions and throws adorning the lounge, ideal for enjoying a coffee or wine.

Opening a restaurant has presented its challenges to Ely however she has been fortunate in acquiring a good team and credits her success to retaining good quality staff by being flexible with hours.

“I have four locals from Forrest, a chef from Colac, waitresses from Winchelsea and Barongarook, a kitchenhand from Winchelsea, age is no problem for me either,” Ely said.

The local community has embraced their newest dining spot in addition to the strong support by those passing through or visitors to the popular town.

If you would like to taste test the menu or enjoy a glass of wine overlooking the garden, Dar Teta is open Thursday to Monday midday to 9.30pm.
